Gas Detector
Our hydrocarbon detection and analysis equipment incorporates several detectors. The primary gas detector is the catalytic filament detector (CFD). It operates on the principle of catalytic combustion of hydrocarbons in the presence of a heated platinum wire at concentration levels below the lower explosive limit. The increasing heat, due to combustion, causes a corresponding increase in the resistance of the platinum wire filament. The resistance increase is measured through the use of a Wheatstone bridge circuit and recorded as a unit of gas.
Continental Laboratories currently incorporates a state of the art infrared gas detection system that provides a backup to our extremely sensitive low-range catalytic unit. The infrared gas detection system improves our capability of accurately reading large amounts of gas that would typically saturate a catalytic filament. By incorporating both of these systems we are able to accurately measure and evaluate gas in environments that typically could not be accurately measured, utilizing just one type of technology.
